Leadership of Chancellor Merkel German Translation Association
Germany has experienced many firsts with its leader, Chancellor Angela Merkel. She is the first head of her country to have grown up in the communist East, according to a German to English Translation service. She holds the record for being the first female chancellor and the youngest one. During her first term, her efforts were stymied by her liberal coalition party members, but this changed during her second term. As the leader of Europe’s powerhouse, Chancellor Angela Merkel sits in a position of prominence among world leaders.
Her experiences in the communist East German system have strongly influenced her values and vision for Germany. Raised in the German state of Brandenburg, near East Berlin, Chancellor Angela Merkel was the daughter of a Lutheran minister. Physics was her favorite subject and she planned to become a physicist. But restrictions on personal freedoms made achieving one’s potential extremely difficult. To keep up her skills in the scientific field, Chancellor Angela Merkel earned extra cash by working for a Medical Translation company. Chancellor Angela Merkel’s experiences dealing with the difficult East German bureaucracy probably helped her position herself in government when the country reunified.
Helmut Kohl appointed her to a cabinet position after she became a parliament member. Kohl belittled her by calling her “the girl”, but Chancellor Angela Merkel continued to gain prominence in spite of it. According to an Arabic Translation organization, the Christian Democratic Union (Kohl’s party) received millions of DMs in illegal funds. The money was supplied by two countries. One source of the money was from kickbacks for the sale of arms to Saudi Arabia and the other resulted from a fraudulent oil deal with the French. According to a prominent French translator, over 300 million DM in illegal funds were funneled to bank accounts in the canton of Geneva. Kohl became mired in the scandal but Chancellor Angela Merkel emerged unscathed.
Now, seventy percent of Germans report that they are highly satisfied with the job that Chancellor Angela Merkel is doing. With the support of the majority of voters, Chancellor Angela Merkel has concentrated her efforts on the environment and the German economy. As only the second German chancellor in history to have addressed the US Congress, she reinforced her commitment to improve human rights throughout the world. However, she will have to temper her popularity with demands from German voters to pull troops out of Afghanistan. With 77-percent of all Germans dissapointed in Chancellor Angela Merkel’s job performance, it looks as if she has a great deal of improvements to make in terms of warming the German people to her ideas on Afghanistan, tax reform and relations with Poland. While the opinions on Merkel’s approval varry widely, one Financial Translation Analyst said that Merkel’s embarassing approval ratings are due to record levels of government debt and forecasts that the Global Recession is far from over and unforseen expenses are on the horizon. The government gave firms tax relief at the start of 2010. While Merkel’s conservatives have warned further cuts in 2011 would depend on an assessment of future tax revenue estimates that is due in May, the FDP is insisting on further cuts.
Merkel has largely disappeared from public view the last three weeks. However, even as she is not making media appearances, there are spokespeople for the Chancellor who are speaking and indicating that Merkel is pleased wit her new coalition. Furthermore, some of her aids have gone as far as organizing media events where they staged questions and indicated that Merkel is pleased with the coalition.
