Policing is an interesting choice of Careers, can you come up with any other Career Ideas where you could be protecting your town, creating a safer place for your friends and loved ones? Careers in the Police are just that. A day as a police officer is rarely similar, it is an unpredictable career, anything could come to pass, whether it’s dealing with a crime, filing some paperwork or giving support to victims, there’s lots to do to keep you active. There are also numerous different roles on offer within the police, depending on your qualifications and health you could be out on the streets patrolling neighbourhoods or back at the station performing desk duties. Let’s take a quick look over what these roles include.

If you’re hoping to give something back to society, then New Careers as Police Community Support Officers are incredible opportunities. These officers may sometimes deal with lesser crimes, but their greatest role is to act as deterrents to help avert crimes in the first place. You will be patrolling the streets of a selection of neighbourhoods, interacting with the public, offering advice and supporting Police Officers at crime scenes. Even though PCSOs do not have the same powers as a regular Police Officer, they are nevertheless important parts of the force and carry great responsibilities. There are no official qualifications desired to join, but you will need to pass written tests and be physically and mentally capable for the job.

Police Officers are the first Careers people identify within policing. They carry out comparable tasks to the community support officers, though their responsibilities are heavier. Police Officers study more complex crimes, sometimes using high tech equipment and they also protect the public from hostility. A lot of the work performed by these officers is mentally challenging, trying to recognise what makes people act the way they do. There are also occasions when the job can be physically taxing and responsiveness and fast actions may save your life. Certainly this job is not for everyone, but for those who are intrigued, the requirements are very similar to that of the PCSOs, the big distinction being that there is physical fitness tests and training needed, so you’ll need to get in shape before you’ll be considered.

Finally, if you’re unsure about New Careers in policing and hope to ease your way in, why not take into account becoming a Special Constable? Special constables, or “Specials” are people who volunteer for 4 hours a week, receive training and do simple tasks in the community. As far as Career Ideas go, this choice is great for starting off slow and building your way up. If you’re happy with the way the job progresses, you can then look into promotions to become a full member of the squad. Basic roles of the Specials involve local intelligence-based patrols and also supporting with crime prevention. You could also be asked to help at accident scenes or carry out door to door enquiries. Requirements again are generally the same as the PCSOs, you don’t need any official qualifications, but there are written tests you need to take part in. Ask at your local station about becoming a special, it’s an outstanding way to build your skills.
