Networking refers to the groups of individuals and contacts we deal with or chat to on a regular basis. People generally have different kinds of networks, a family network, a social network, a work network. Occasionally these networks can cross over and interlink with each other. Networking is a very handy tool for people wishing to change Careers. Having a large network can help with many aspects of changing Careers, or looking for New careers. It can even help you come up with new Career ideas, if you can chat to people who are in Careers you have never thought about before. So, if you are thinking about New careers, or looking for some new Career ideas, then establishing a good network is certainly a good place to start.

Networking is useful because it can help you find out about jobs before they are even announced. This is generally how higher positions are filled within companies. It can be highly advantageous if you can find out about jobs this early on, and get your foot in the door, so to speak. Managers and recruiters quite often prefer to recruit through networking, as it’s a highly cost-effective way to discover appropriate candidates for certain types of jobs. For them, it means they are able to find out about appropriate applicants for jobs simply via word of mouth – they don’t even need to put pen to paper. It also removes a lot of work for them, as they no longer have to set about placing job adverts, and filtering through all of the applications that they then receive. Of course, it won’t be feasible for all New careers to be obtained this way, but it certainly is a very quick way to acquire a job should one become open that is suitable.

To start shaping your network, it is generally best to start with ex-colleagues, managers, and possibly teachers and mentors that you have worked with. Look to anyone that has access to networks you could potentially tap into for jobs information. If these people have moved onto areas where you are interested in working, it may put you in good stead for applying for a job. If not, they may still become informed of other openings within the organisations they work for that may be more suitable.

Another place to start and build a network is with the individuals who work within the organisation you are interested in working in. Do some research on them first, and then you could start off with a respectful letter explaining you are interested in working in that particular company or industry, and whilst you understand they might not have any jobs on offer at the moment, but you are interested. They may appreciate the enthusiasm, as long as you put effort into your CV and make it appropriate for the role you are applying for.

Taking these straightforward steps can significantly increase the chances of you getting the job you want, or the career you want. It may help you discover Careers you would never have previously thought about. Make sure you keep in touch with people, and keep your contacts available – it will help you find the best job.
