Transferable Skills And How They Might Influence Your Career Choices And Open Up Additional Career Choices For You.
Trying to come up with new Career ideas can be a tought thing. If you have been in the same job for a long time, you could be afraid that all of the skills you have obtained in the job are specific to that job. If you have experienced a few Careers over the years, then you could be afraid that this could negatively effect your experience with particular skills. However, you may not need to worry. If you are thinking about New careers, and you have a few Career ideas already that you would like to think about, you will already have skills that can be transferred over to a number of different Careers. Of course, a few New careers will require new skills to be learnt, but you could be surprised if you sit back and view all the different skills you have obtained up over the years.
One of the most obvious transferable skills, and a one that nearly all Careers utilise at some point, are IT skills. Basic PC literacy is almost a requirement for New careers these days, and if you do not possess any IT skills it would be certainly worth your time to enrol on a course and familiarise yourself with the rudimentary functions of a PC. However, nearly all people will at some time in their Careers have made use of a PC at some time. This is one of the most advantageous transferable skills today.
Another very useful transferable skill is the ability to drive. Now whilst the Careers themselves may not require you to drive, being able to drive greatly boosts the range of Career ideas you can seriously consider, as one obstacle to people can be the distance they can or cannot travel to work. Then of course, there are a number of Careers which make the most of driving ability, such as joining the police force or the ambulance service.
Other skills you could pick up without even knowing it are skills like organisation skills, and the ability to work under pressure, or to meet tight deadlines. These are all transferable skills that potential employers want to see from people, and can be useful in a number of different Careers. If you haven’t worked in a job yet, perhaps you have just left school, then you will still have obtained skills such as working to deadlines, and working in a team. A good idea is to sit down with a pen and paper, and make a note of all the jobs you have done over the years, and the things you have done in those jobs. Then list all the skills you have obtained by doing that particular job. You will be astonished at how many skills you will be able to transfer to any New careers that you choose to start. You may even discover that some skills are particularly good for careers that you might never have thought about before, and this could open up some new Career ideas for you. You could even wind up thinking about Careers you hadn’t even heard of! All in all, listing what skills you have obtained up can be a very useful exercise to undertake.
