Pilates is a physical fitness technique designed before 1920 as a treatment plan for soldiers going back home from the first World War. Joseph Pilates was a gymnast born in Germany who believed that mental and physical wellness are part of a continuum. Pilates tried to aid the wounded soldiers to restore their health by strengthening, stabilizing and stretching important muscle groups. He proposed a few particular motions which focused on form and control, and incorporated them into the established rehabilitation methods. Pilates proceeded to develop “The Pilates Principles” to train the whole body; alignment, centering, concentration, control, precision, breathing, and flowing movement.
